Haikus from Grimms' Fairy Tales by The Brothers Grimm

'Alas!' said the mouse,
'now I see what has happened,
now it comes to light!

Hansel, however
little by little, threw all
the crumbs on the path.

Meanwhile the wolf ran
straight to the grandmother's house
and knocked at the door.

As soon as the girl
was assured of this, she came
from behind the cask.

They lighted up their
seven lamps, and saw at once
that all was not right.

The miser cried out,
'Oh, no! no! for heaven's sake
don't listen to him!

Compared to this seat,
all the learning of the schools
is as empty air.

Next morning the king
had the entire town searched
for his daughter's shoe.

Then said one after
the other, 'Who has eaten
from my little plate?

After a short time
the dead man became warm too,
and began to move.

So the messengers
came home, and had had all their
trouble for nothing.
