Haikus from Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu

From a book categorized as Fiction / Gothic and 91 pages follows a description and a number of hidden haikus found in the book:

This Gothic novella tells the story of a young woman's susceptibility to the attentions of a female vampire named Carmilla. Carmilla predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by 25 years, and has been adapted many times for cinema. Although Carmilla is a lesser known and far shorter Gothic vampire story than the generally-considered master work of that genre, Dracula, the latter is heavily influenced by Le Fanu's short story.

"I almost forget,
it is years ago." I laughed.
"You are not so old.

I could not cry out,
although as you may suppose,
I was terrified.

We called her by name;
but there was still no reply.
We looked round the room.

How did she pass out
from her room, leaving the door
locked on the inside?

exclaimed my father,
more than ever bewildered.
"To strike her head off."
